I'm wondering what deal Apple gave the "iCar" people who were laid off (as opposed to reassigned to other projects). Come to think of it, the only person I know who has been laid off recently was at Google Fiber when that project reduced by a sizable chunk. Offer was, for some months proportional to years-of-service at any Alphabet company, that you'd keep receiving a paycheck and get priority placement with Google/Alphabet recruiters for re-hiring in the company. Get re-hired in that time, and you keep your vacation, RSU's, etc. In effect, a paid mini-sabbatical. That reflects well on Alphabet. What did you get with your layoff? Any company, though I'm particularly interested in that Apple "skunkworks" project... if indeed there were any layoffs, I'd think Apple would want to keep that talent around for other projects.. maybe they had more drive-train specialists and transportation policy wonks than they knew what to do with.
surprised these companies don’t just move people to other parts of company
Not always possible. E.g. knew a guy who built space satalites for Google. Google sells the department...no where to place them...so they lay off
iCar ppl can apply for Tesla, Uber, Lyft, so not the end of the world
Yep. Basically every other company has a better self-driving car program than Apple
BofA used to be 4 weeks up to 4 years of service +2 weeks for each year after that. Not sure if they still have that. But in 2008-pocalypse, some old timers walked away with 6+ months.
A week per year is kind of the norm. In my experience they offer you more weeks if you sign an agreement not to sue them.
You forgot to tag @Apple in your post.
Thanks, I edited to add a tag. Happy to see any / all layoff details from anywhere. Should be a "Don't let the Glassdoor spank you on the way out" site
