Leave Amazon for FB? (Analytics Management)

I’m currently managing a team of analysts and data scientists at Amazon in a subject area I find interesting. But I’ve been here for awhile and have an offer pending with Facebook. I can’t say the subject matter is as interesting, but the culture around data at FB seems better from the outside (investment in time and infrastructure needed for analytics). I’m expecting the TC to be at least 50% higher at FB, so I’ll probably take the bait and move regardless, but I’m curious if anyone has made the switch in the analytics space and what the differences were like.

What is your TC? And what level are you at Amazon? What level offer do you have at FB?

Amazon tgm OP Oct 18, 2018

L6 vs M1 Current TC is ~250k, expecting offer to be around 350-400k

Maybe software engineers, but not analytics folks. Well, at least not at Amazon which is at least half the reason I want to leave.

Yeah Facebook data practices make headlines all the time. ;)

I said in terms of analytics not ducks given about customers. Amazon is amazing at that - which ironically makes this job justifiably difficult at times.

What does it take to get into amazon analytics management? What skill set and else they look for?

Experience managing projects, stakeholders, ambiguous priorities, etc, plus technical knowledge of SQL, stat, data science, etc. Every team is different though, I've seen some leaders with minimal tech skills but strong business intuition and vice versa.

Congrats. You should go there, enjoy the free food and pay raise. If you don’t like it after 6 months or get PIP’ed then you can always jump back to Amazon and become a L7. I am not messing around I saw this happened.

Will save this to show the Amazon recruiter a year from now. Thanks!

I’m considering the same thing. I don’t have an offer in hand from FB yet but we’re talking, and when I said $300K a year they said “No problem.”

Amazon tgm OP Oct 30, 2018

Did you go forward?

Amazon εpsilon Oct 31, 2018

Slowly. I’m having conversations with them and I have a meeting with some of the team coming up in a couple of weeks that I asked for. I haven’t committed to interviewing yet.

Am in a similar scenario. Anyone else have experience with this move?
