Started to lose interest in work about a few months ago. Current project is okay, but not exciting. Tried to pitch a few ideas but didn't catch on. Especially don't believe in the direction my team is going (not in the best interest of customers). Have a good offer from a startup with good funding that is really interesting and could be game changing. I feel good connections with CEO & CTO. TC is a bit more than right now but the more important thing is this feels like the career direction I want to follow. But as any early stage start up, it can go to burst anytime. Thoughts?
I have always chosen the “leave” option and it might be coincidence, but it’s resulted in a quadrupling of TC over 6 years. I think staying more than 1-2 years has very minimal payoff in general.
Don’t chase the exciting stuffs - most of the times they look so good from the distant. Try to make things exciting and wait for the right opportunities instead of jumping into some unstable thing. Work on the skills that you may think you lack. Nobody guarantees you that the next one would be perfect and it takes time to earn trust in a new place. I am saying all these because you said that TC offered is a bit more. To me, embracing a complete uncertainty for a bit makes no sense. And yeah, having patience is good most of the times.
How is it possible for TC being higher than at Microsoft? Do you count options in your TC? If you have financial stability I would go for it. You can always return to Microsoft later
My wife and I are financially stable, even if we're out of work for 6 months. As I'm still young (< 30), I want to keep learning as fast as I can. My learning has slowed down quite a bit in the last 3 months. I feel like turning up the gear, and I would learn a ton in this new environment, even if it dies in 2 years
Do it. Worst case is you go back to another big boring job in a year with more life experience. No one knows what will happen in future so make sure have savings
Only leave if the new cash comp exceeds your current cash comp. If it doesn't, you can definitely get that elsewhere. Remember that stock options are worthless because literally 9/10 startups fail.
