Leave great wlb 200k for 204k at Amazon L4

I currently work as a tech lead, as a corp to corp contractor, with a great wlb of a remote day a week and never staying past 5pm. The work isnt very exciting and im not passionate about the projecf, but the wlb is great. I interviewed for L5 at Amazon, but they set me as L4, but said they could offer me 204k TC isn their NYC office. They said if I didnt want to take L4, I could also come back to interview in 5-6 months again for L5. Just wanted to hear everyones thoughts. i think the learnign and challenges would be great at Amazon. But i know ill end up making less/hour. I also contract on the side, so those lost hours are essentially lost income. In terms of priorities, Im in my young 20s and want to eventually build my own start ups or work the corporate ladder aggressively. Open to either career path. YOE: 4.5 TC: 300k. 200k from my 9-5 contract and I contract another 20 hours a week at $100/hour.

Keep interviewing for better opportunities where you’d find good wlb and good learning opportunities.

I don’t necessarily need a good wlb

Given I’ll work the extra hours anyway, but just be able to bill side clients for it.

I am curious about that as well... what side projects are you working on? Also did you apply to other companies (Google or Facebook )? why just Amazon ?

I interviewed at FB in nyc but didn’t pass the onsite. I didn’t get the onsite for SamClub a few months ago. And I haven’t interviewed with any other late tech companies. I don’t reach out the recruiters there, but maybe I should start!

Grass is always greener on the other side! I can say my work is challenging and I get to learn a lot and there are all the good things that come with working at a large company! Not to brag, but the things that I work on are being used by millions of people, so to say the least, its meaningful. I ,however, only make $130k a year and would love nothing more than making $300k a year. Even though you'd be getting $204k at Amazon, taking the cut of $100k a year to be at a place where you can learn and interact with so called 'bright' people, would prolly not worth going for given that you'd pretty much give up your personal life and some time dowm the road, you'd enter the politics of the company and its just toxic! You are the one deciding for yourself and you prolly wouldn't know until you actually do it.

Not sure if I would lose all of the extra 100k. Given that it’s side things that I can do at night and weekends, I imagine I can keep most of that.

Qualcomm bright.lit Nov 21, 2019

Hopefully you won't. There's no other person who can step in your shoes and decide for you. You'd get million perspectives but you'd only find out the real one once you do it. Would you please do me a favor and update on your situation 1 year from now, 2 years from now and 3 years from now? That would give an even better picture to us who are sharing our two cents :)

How much is it after-tax?

I’m Corp to Corp. so I can pay myself 90k and take the rest as capital gains at 15%. At best that turns into 235k after taxes.

Qualcomm bright.lit Nov 21, 2019

Whoa!!!!!!!!!! Have you calculated on where you'll end up after taxes if you go for Amazon?
