Leave team due to clueless manager?

I recently joined MSFT as a dev with couple yoe, and the manager of the team I’m on is an absolutely clueless manager. I’ve found out that ever since he joined the team as new manager a year ago, over 80% of the team has left. Not sure if it is due to him joining or other reasons. What I do know is that he has absolutely no idea of what is going on and happening around in Azure and the surrounding ecosystem. He knows zero technical details and has no idea what is going on on a daily basis. All he does daily is think about what to say during stand up the next day.. I recently joined 2 months ago, what should I do? I feel like there is no future in this team, and definitely no chance of promo since he doesn’t even know how to promo someone..

Also if I stay on current team, then switch later, it will just reset my promo progress...

It might reset your promotion progress but then again, it might make promotion actually possible. Where you are now, having a clueless manager doesn’t help with promotion progress anyway.

A good manager will promote you when ready. Your progress is not necessarily tied to time with a manager. I get the perception though.

Do you have anyone else in the team who knows the technical details? Focus on learning, not on promo. It is possible that the manager will leave soon too.

Yes but given that the majority of the team has left, the team is very understaffed and fragmented. The ones remaining don’t talk much, I find myself in my office all day without talking to anyone..

Don't reset your promo because your manager is a dumbass.

This is what happen if one wants non technical managers. You can even have manager from Starbucks. Remember being technical does not equal to micromanaging.

Having worked for the evil empire known as MSFT and with System Center, best to jump ship now for another team.

Learn to manage up and across, get noticed, do networking, succeed either in current role and get promoted or move teams ezpz

I am afraid it would look bad if I jump ship in just 2 months of joining... what reason would I even give to the new team for why I left?

Is he an Indian manager?

A bad manager at MSFT is disastrous. Run, don’t walk.
