Leaving FB after 7 months

Nov 17, 2020 61 Comments

Leaving FB after 7 months and returning to previous employer: how much resume damage will this cause? How long after can I apply to new jobs?

Reason: mental health is really suffering. Maybe remote onboarding/wfh is part of it, but I don't think I'm cut out for this place either.

Previous employer is a small company, not a FANG. Pay is half FB.

Make sure it’s not just imposter syndrome. When people move to companies like Google and Fb they tend to look around and compare. There are lot of people working hard, just focus on your work.

Tbh, I think I'm just not good enough and/or intense enough. I don't think team change is allowed in first year?

Hey man , I don’t work at fb, but I’d say stick it till perf review . Then start low key looking for other teams
You’re 3 mths away from a year . You can do it and you’re good enough . If you’ve gotten into fb you are good enough
Take it from a loser like me who’s interviewed 5 times already

  • In the grand scheme it won't matter. But people will definitely think you were pip'd. Were you overlevelled?

Why not just ride it out and see what happens, worst case is you make another half year of the TC get fired.

    • if you dont think it will work out, then go back or explore team switch. If you are working hand and foot just to catch up, it indicates ability or poor team fit.

      OP,

There a plenty of resources at FB to help you with this.

      - Search wiki for mental wellness benefits
      - Search workplace for posts
      - Have an open conversation with your manager
      - Talk to your HRBP
      - Switch teams

Leaving the company should be your last resort.

Previous employer Google or Citadel or Albertsons? Not much damage. Previous employer Kansas Garbage Collecting? Seems like damage.

Does Albertsons offer same level on return? I am expecting OP is atleast aiming for Senior aisle manager or Senior counter specialist.

"Mental health degradation" is a good enough reason for you to move. Any new employer will understand it. If they don't, you don't wanna go there anyway.

Can you elaborate more about roblox wlb or work intensity? You feel better because of skillset match or something else?

As OP stated above, I also put in long hours. It was stressful, not sure about other teams. Also everyone wants a higher rating as that can affect your bonus and equity. It was not a good fit for me. I enjoy the work I do here and its interesting. The work life balance is better here and overall quality of life. Those are things money can never buy.
