I've worked at PwC for about 5-6 years, but I've been considering leaving my current job for a more risky take. I'm relatively young (late 20s), and it's been a dream of mine to start my own company. What are your thoughts on making a decision like this -- do you think it's ridiculous to leave a stable job at a great company for something uncertain?
Do you have a business running already? If not, why not start while you're working and have stable income. Leave your job once your business starts to bring in money.
I don’t have much experience/advice in starting a business, but I feel you. In my early 30s and can’t resist the urge to start something of my own even though I don’t really have an idea. Personally if you are a CPA I feel if you maintain the status and keep abreast of the industry I feel the accounting skill is always handy and can be a safety net if your entrepreneurial endeavor does not work out. But it might work for some people, I find it will be difficult to keep a business while maintaining a career at PwC. It’s not a job you can just slack through the day and be ok, especially you have been there for 5-6 years and in a managerial role. Anyways doesn’t seem like I offer any tangible advice...just some compassion here and wish u all the luck!
I don;t think it's ridiculous! I'd say start by "piloting". Volunteer your time with a start-up you admire. Start something small on the side before you leave your current job. I personally am risk adverse, but I'd rather think of myself as a calculated risk-taker. Validate that you actually like starting your own thing vs just liking the idea of it. It's a big change, so "pilot" and test the water before you jump in.
If you have a great business idea, why not! As you get older and build your family, taking such risk no longer becomes even an option to ponder about. PwC is a great workplace, and solid accounting skills would always be a great facet in life, but in your heart you will know whether you can stay complacent or will always have that itch/regret for entrepreneurship. Pilot something and test the waters. Good luck!
In America it’s the way to go if you can pull it. This is the best place for entrepreneurs.
