Has anyone done the same? Was it worth it? It sucks that the culture around negotiating using external offers isn’t different. If MSFT matched my offer but didn’t paint me with a red flag I would happily stay here. Current TC 150k Offer TC 220k 1 < YOE < 2
70k increase in TC after 1-2 yoe.. hmm what is the problem/question here???
It’s not a very specific question but just want to get broad opinion on leaving a great team/situation for more pay and the uncertainty of the new company
There is always some pain when you join a new team or company. There are unknowns, better or worse. In your stage of career it's easier to switch and ok to switch for more pay and different experience. However, dont switch just because everyone else is doing. If MSFT matches the offer and if you like the team, just evaluate your options with a clear head. Trust me there are no red flags in these companies, we are hiring so many people and we are always short on talent. It sucks when experienced engineers leave the orgs and it's a win if we can retain anyone with counter offer. Hope that helps.
Thanks, this was helpful
I'm in a similar boat. Awesome small close knit team with a great manager and outstanding WLB but I know I could make more TC if I jump. Trying not to be lured just for higher TC as a significant drop in quality of life would negate much of the benefit.
Although I haven’t moved yet I would definitely say at least do some interviews. It was eye opening to see how much more other companies will pay for my skills and experience.
Location?
Seattle
Yes. Worth it. Go see the world. The worst case is to come back (with matched pay)
Thanks
