Leaving after 2 weeks for better offer?

Is it okay to leave a company I just joined for a better offer?

After only two weeks with the company I just joined (not FB) I’m unexpectedly getting a much better offer. They’re a more established, public, company and TC that is at least 20% better (prior to any negotiation). The only downside is the new offer will be “harder work” and have a worse commute when in-person resumes.

I feel bad leaving the company I just joined after a week, knowing they’re already moving people around because they’re relying on me to handle what I’ve been hired for. But I’d be crazy not to take it, right? I’ve actually done this once before, many years ago, and it worked out okay. I have better confidence in this move, this time.

YOE: 11
TC: $180k/year

New offer: At least $220k/year

Edit: Getting more responses telling me to stay then I thought I would. I’m going to try to do a better job of outlining the advantages I see to the new offer…
–AT LEAST 20% higher, with zero negotiation on my part. The final offer will likely end up higher than 20%, and also continue to increase because the second company is public. Current company is not, and options are not attractive.
—Product/Project, while more difficult, is also more interesting to me. Furthermore, it has the potential to seriously improve my reputation in the industry if things go well.
—The company itself is definitely not going anywhere. It’s hard to be sure, but it feels like there would be improved long-term job security.
—Even when the commute returns, it will likely be on a hybrid schedule. Company used to run a shuttle as well, hopefully that returns someday.

Honestly, the only major downside I see is then immediate hit to my reputation at the current company. But I’d really love other opinions.

  • I have done this before, and it is an awkward position to be in when you give notice. That being said, most companies will gladly screw your over if it is to their advantage. As employees, I feel it is our duty to watch out for ourselves and make the best steps for our own future and our careers. I say take the other job if you feel it is the right move for you.

Do it man. The world has amnesia anyway, so your hiring manager may not even know in a year or two if you wanna go back.

The best answer is to stop interviewing, the more you interview the better offer you get. You have to draw a line and be content with what you make, there is no end to greed or comp. If you do quit, you will burn the bridge but no one can really stop you. If you are on the fence better now than quitting 2 months later when you are being trusted and expected to deliver some real work

I did stop interviewing, except for this one last company that took forever to finish. I truly want to find somewhere I can work for a long time without looking.

Bad plan that may work only in small companies with tremendous upside potential. In established enterprises if you want growth you will need to look again soon either internally or externally.

  • At least for me harder work + shitty commute does is not worth 20%. At least for me time > money

Harder work and commute - not worth 20%

It will be more than 20% with negotiations and stock appreciation, I just can’t say how much.

Ok ask yourself how much you value stress of - commute and harder work . Does that extra money worth it , considering you mayb be burning some bridges . If it is ok to switch . Ultimately whatever makes you happier about that decision . Maybe negotiate wfh or less hard work down the road if you are concerned about these very much

    20% is nothing tbh.

Nothing about that offers seems worth it.
Whatadw you choose the company you are currently at?

I’ve been looking for a long time, and the current offer was the first decent permanent one I got. Company has a reputation for being good to employees (outside tc).

Personally, a $40k/year bump feels big to me.
