Currently content at Cisco (New Grad SWE) but I plan to begin interviewing again come 2020; I will have been at Cisco for >=6 months. Looking to target other large companies (FAANG). That being said, I have 2 questions: 1) Am I correct in assuming FAANG recruiters won’t care about the <1-yr stint? I ended up on a high-impact/visibility project and will have seen releases one and two through to completion, so no shortage of resume/interview content personally, but just wondering. 2) Is leveling up possible when jumping ship this early? That is, could I actually enter the interview pipeline for SDE2 @ Amazon (or 61 @ Microsoft, etc)? I know this can be contingent on a number of things, but wondering if theres anything I can do to influence the outcome (besides kill the interview). TC: 102 + 7 + 5%

I doubt amazon would talk with you about sde2 and even if they will - you’ll be pretty much automatically row leveled at some point of the process. Honestly you haven’t done nothing yet ... chill and learn the work
Ya, I don’t disagree that it’s highly unlikely. With regards to my work, I suppose I’m thinking about this with respect to other new grads I’ve been speaking to at Cisco. Not at all trying to sound demeaning, but just about every SWE I’ve talked to is either getting very little work, or isn’t even fully involved in their team’s development practices (standups, sprint planning, code review, etc.). I know that doesn’t speak to the value/worth of the work I’ve done personally; I just mean to say that I can say with a high degree of certainty that I fell into a project that’s allowed me to hit the ground running and, as I said in the comment above, have more impact than what I thought was possible in ~6 months at Cisco. That being said, Cisco does not lend itself so well to leveling up, hence my questions.
I say finish 1 year and then look for another sde1 to be realistic at a place that lets you have more impact Start lc and applying at about 9 month
If you manage to live through at least 2 annual Cisco layoffs, then maybe it's time to look
My org is focusing mainly on its contractors; I’m relatively safe
Answer to question 2 is a definite no. Maybe after one year, you can go for SDE2. Amazon interviewed a friend of mine for SDE2 after 1 YOE because he did really well on the the phone interview && Capital One.
Go for it my friend... No company would blink an eye if they had to fire an employee just coz they were hired 1 year.. Just don't go drumming around abt it to your colleagues! All the best!
If you're prepared it doesn't hurt to try.
I’m beginning to study now. I think the earliest I’d begin to schedule on-sites would be Feb 2020
Start now the process takes like 6 months. Get 1 year on your resume or it will stain it since you’re not from a top university. After 1 year start really applying. Most people know that Cisco sucks but they want to see that you can stick out a shit company for a year since there will be times when you hate the current company.
I'm in a very similar situation OP. Been here about 8 months fresh out of college. Ive picked stuff up quickly I think compared to the other new grads I work with, but I think this was only cause I had to force my way onto harder projects on my team. My manager said he wants to promote me in the next cycle. Not sure cisco is the most exciting place to work, so maybe I'll stick around for a promotion then leave though. I do feel like working for more than a year here is beneficial though for future jobs. Curious what advixe others could give me though TC 120k + 25k signing + 8k bonus G6
If you can successfully jump ship and join FANG go for it. Nobody will give a fuck about <1 year at Cisco if jumped to a higher tier
Do you think it might be better to wait around at cisco for a promotion before ditching though? I dont know if it would help for getting hired at a higher level elsewhere

I'd recommend sticking around a little and actually getting some things done.6 months is barely any time at all. Also, I'm former Microsoft - you'd be considered 59-60 with less than 2 yrs actual work experience.
I respect your point. I guess what I was trying to get at was that I’m comfortable with the contributions I’ve made thus far. I‘m one of just two SWEs on the project (backend/networking automation focus, rest of team consists of networking engineers and one front-end engineer). The codebase is quite young so I’ve touched just about every piece of it and have had to design/add entirely separate modules on top. Ramp-up lasted about a month and I was taking on full story points thereafter. My responsibilities have amounted quickly and I feel I’ll be satisfied with my impact in a few months. I appreciate the response, I don’t disagree leveling up might be entirely out of the question.
Anything is possible. If you have some specialization like ML coupled with PhD, definitely. Gen SWE... I'm not sure. If you're within one year of graduation Microsoft will consider you a University hire. Please let us know how it turns out though! Good luck.
