I've been LC'ing for about a month now. For the LC medium problems I'm noticing that I have gotten a lot better at recognizing the core algorithm in the problem (dp, dfs , bfs, union find etc. ). Once I have the core algo set up, it takes a while to fully finish the problem - fixing the loop indices, array overflows, failing on a real edge case, and some syntax errors. My question is since most interviews are on a whiteboard, how important is it to fully "finish" the problem with no syntax or runtime errors, given no code completion or syntax highlighting available. Unless the interviewer is not typing the code on a laptop, I'd assume there's no way to correctly identify all errors. #leetcode #google #amazon #facebook #netflix #apple #interview
Most engineers aren’t robots. They’re not going to catch all mistakes, just glaringly obvious ones (started off on wrong indices, Logic error, etc)
If you are a hands on person you shouldnt have trouble recognizing syntax errors.
Depends on companies you are interviewing and some of the engineers can be really nit picky. Its important to know your library, but it’s okay if you do like typos, just make sure that you double check to reduce the occurrence
Loop indices, array overflows, and edge case detection are important. Syntax errors much less so unless your interview says so.
Interviewers have seen the question solved teens of times. they can easily figure out the issues in your solution
It means you need more practice. Once you figure out the approach, implementation should be quick and bug free. This comes through practice.
Thank you all, great feedback, I really wish I had the support of this community earlier in my career
When interviewers take a picture of the whiteboard after the interview it is for this reason. If there is a tie between candidates the hiring committee can go back and actually read through their code and make a better decision. Although this isn’t the case always. They might call for another interview
