Increase TC - stay PMM or Leet into dev?

Oct 20, 2020 5 Comments

Looking for advice from all the smart blind people -

Currently a Product Marketing Manager at MS in Redmond. I’ve been looking at ways to increase TC but would rather not leave the company.

I did coding in HS many... many.... years ago but that’s it. With increasing TC, what do you all recommend? Stay and level? Leet and go?

Contemplating utilizing the flexible work place to go somewhere with lower COL, but from what I’ve seen, it would be a 10-15 percent pay cut.

Taking all the blind data with a grain of salt but can’t help but feel “weird” knowing that there are TC’s that are double what I’m making for coding and dev. Honestly, can’t even fathom making 180-200k but apparently this is the space that devs are in.

Appreciate any advice

It’s basically an investment in yourself if you choose to study and prepare for SWE interviews. If you’re willing to do the work to prepare, then in the long run it’ll pay off.

IMO you are more likely to succeed as a PMM. Coding in high school doesn’t mean much. Nowadays everyone is coding in high school.

  • FWIW, you can make 200k as a PMM, but SWE will likely get you there faster.

From a purely TC point of view, yes switching to SWE will be better.

But do you enjoy coding ? You don't have to love it. But do you find it interesting to some extent.

IMO, high TC won't be fulfilling if you end up hating coding.

Might be worth considering Product Manager (PM) roles since those are closer to your current role and pay is close to SWE.
