Not going with amazon's offer, but I went through team-matching.

At first, I thought the amazon stories on blind were a little overblown.

The first manager was super level headed. I asked normal questions, but I threw in a question about PIP at the end. He gave a good level headed answer for saying it happens but he works hard to help the person through it, and gave an example of a success story on his team.

The second hiring manager, was a little weird. First, he kept talking over me any time I tried to say a word or ask a question. There were a bunch of red flags, but the funniest was when I got to the question about how he handles PIP. His answer was "I can't believe you're asking this when you don't even work here yet. Why would you ask this, this is a mentality of an underachiever, you should be asking about how to get promoted not about how to underachieve, its very disappointing". Then at the end he says I really hope you join my team, here I'll give my email. Bruh lol

My reaction in my head was "I can't believe I'm being gas-lighted when I don't work here" haha but I kept the poker face. I'm actually shocked he convinced 60 people to team-match with his team. But basically confirmed people's opinions about amazon having nightmare and decent managers.

What a dumb ass question by you? You ask about the org vision, career growth, team engagement, work impact and learning opportunities, not about what will a hiring manager do when you are an incompetent.

Agree with manager , it is the equivalent of asking what happens if i miss a lot of days , or what happens if my code sucks . As a HM these are red flags , as someone who is already thinking they may underachiever

Turning the tables with the question- what is the answer you were hoping for ? What did you want him to say ?

If a manager doesn't like you, the manager can PIP you and frame a bullshit reason, it doesn't always has to do with performance. OP was right to ask and better understand.

That question was totally valid. Or at least meant to check the managers attitude towards reports. When there are so many QA or TPMs who turned into managers at Amazon, people are bound to have this uncertainty.

Manager should answered it with a simple answer - โ€œthere is a process etc etc rather than such opinionated answerโ€

  • Asking about PIP is not a sign of underachiever. Top notch investment funds are successful by spending a lot of resources testing for the worst-case scenario when deciding between opportunities. Career is ultimately an investment in yourself. You get a lot of information by testing the extremes. Good question OP! Imagine you responded to manager 2 with what I said above, s/he would go ballistic ๐Ÿคฃ
