I used to care about career and such. Now I don't. I do my job and go home now. I don't try hard for promotions. I don't care about being a high performer. I recognize that company and team success has little to do with me, so I do what I can and don't worry too much if things still aren't working out. I come in the next day, do a little more, then go back home and focus on my life. I used to believe we were changing the world and such. Now I think the world is changing itself and would be pretty much the same with or without me. If I was doing something else, someone almost as good as me would be doing pretty much the same thing, with pretty similar results. So no need to take it seriously, personally, or let it stress me out. It's time to coast a little, relax a bit, watch things unfold and enjoy it like binge watching something on tv. Anyone else here?

Pretty much me. I’ve never lived to work. I was very ambitious about 10 years ago and achieved my goals. My last job stressed the hell out of me due to lack of direction from my manager, never knowing if I was meeting expectations. I’m working to fund my life now and saving like mad for retirement, so I need my job.

Left that job a couple months ago for a new company and totally new role and am extremely happy. Much more relaxed, comfortable with what I’m doing and making a lot more dough.

I don’t care much about getting promoted or climbing the corp ladder. Pay me well with decent benefits, let me work with people I like and respect and I’m good. I go the extra mile when it’s called for, no problem. But I never want a job that calls for that all the time. Being present to enjoy my life is the priority.

  • I’ve been feeling this lately. Not sure if it’s burnout but I’ve also mostly lost my career ambition. Much rather spend time with the fam and kids while they’re young etc. I think it’s time better spent.

  • I work enough to be above average and not get fired but don’t strive to be a superstar, because what’s the point? Keep your algo knowledge sharp and you’ll generally have no issue finding employment. You’ll make more money job hopping than tryharding anyways. We are privileged in that regard.

Idc about “changing the world”. Truth is, we are just cogs in a machine - none of us will live on in history. And to be frank I don’t really care about that anyway. Once you die that’s it, it’s over. So might as well prioritize enjoying life as much as possible while you can, rather than slaving away for Jeff Bezos’ 10th yacht.

I'm mostly in this boat. I do want to be maybe in the top 25%, but that's more a function of having a compatible team and problem space, than how hard you work.
