Stable coins are new in the same sense that social network was not new when facebook came into the picture (MySpace was there before) and apple came into smartphone market (Blackberry and windows mobile are the incumbents). The point is Facebook has the baked in user base of billions that can see wide spread adoption of crypto which so far has been relegated to a tiny subsection of enthusiasts and speculators. Integration with whatsapp and messenger will make it go mainstream and make it accessible to so many undeserved people around the world.
That said, the road ahead is definitely hard and FB knows it. That's why it's working with partners and developing it in the open to assuage people of the trustworthiness of the company. The potential is huge and only time will tell if they can execute the vision
