Rejected by tier2- companies

Mar 10, 2021 120 Comments

I have worked at FANGs for several years and had prior experience. While not at the end of my career, I have reached financial stability and want to optimize for WLB, can't take 50+ hours/week anymore. I have deep tech management experience at senior levels.

Unfortunately I keep being rejected by lower tier companies, while top tier companies are still reaching out.
I know it may sound silly, but... what is the path to succeed in getting a decent position in middle tier companies? I can't get it.

Rejected by: (partial list) Twitter Zillow Expedia Adobe Coinbase
Worked for/got offers from: FB Amazon Apple Google

Any good no drama middle tier company with smart people? A bit more dynamic than pure rest and vest?

Thanks all for your honest feedback.

  • I wouldn’t call Twitter and Coinbase lower tier than FAANG. What makes you think they’re lower tier?

You most likely interview with the thought it’s a tier 2 company and it’s really easy to tell. Why would any company want that?

If you’re a manager at fb part of the perception is you’re supportive of the pip culture, a culture that caused a suicide, and you’re supportive of spying on and profiting off of people’s data. I am curious what actually makes fb top tier other than the salaries given they just buy out companies and have a social network that isn’t so much different than it was in 2012. There are smart people there but also smart people at every company. All the companies you mentioned also offer top tier salaries within competitive range of fb but also have much better cultures. The fact you start your post looking to make a quick buck at “lower tier” companies I think should clue you into what your problem may be. To a hiring manager at any of those companies your post does not look like an attractive hire. Come to coinbase looking to change the world, come to Expedia seeking to win back their lost revenue from covid, come to all the others because you believe in their mission and will strive to make them successful. You want to sleep in on Monday mornings and duck out at 430 while stilling asking for a similar salary you are getting at fb go apply to google.

Thank you. The fact i do not identify with the culture is one of the reasons for change actually. And I am aware salary would potentially be a fraction.

A’s hire A’s and B’s hire C’s. The hiring managers at Tier 2 places are likely not interested in hiring someone who can do their job better than them.

If I am a tier II company(whatever that means!) and I look at your TC - I would reject you too.
