How is working under custom tools team (work on internal stuff) in LinkedIn vs working for a client facing team in midsize companies as a Senior software engineer?
LinkedIn tools team. I'm in tools and its way more cool then what you might be thinking.
Most people at LinkedIn think the internal tooling is garbage, our internal surveys show this too. That said that doesn't mean your work won't be interesting, the tools team is huge.
Is the interview process for them any different for them than regular SE?
Tools/LPS is worse than warm garbage

Are you a Biz App dev? Then come on down to the Custom Tools team. It won't look sexy on your resume and it probably hurts you in future job searches. You'll learn a lot more and push your career more by working on an client facing product.
