Hm I feel like you should be ok and they will just not give you money, similar to no promotion if you asked to be promoted. Not a bad thing; just work harder / next time kinda conversation
If you’re at good terms w your manager and would like to stay at current position then I don’t see the harm in talking about it. During your 1on1s you can bring up that you’ve been exploring and have an offer for X at Y. Say you’d prefer to stay but can’t leave such a gap on the table. You may be able to get counter offer from current company, although be prepared to leave if necessary..Speaking from experience, probably easier at smaller niche companies/teams, I don’t think it will work at general FAANG
Thanks for great detailed answer! I agree I feel like easier at niche, after I typed it up I realize some could be worried that the notion of your mind being elsewhere may warrant the company firing you, but that sounds extreme
Only time that you should do that is if you are prepared and willing to actually leave your job if they don’t increase your pay. At Google, this is unlikely to go well for L5 and below, but I’ve heard a couple rumors of it working. At Google, best case scenario is a discretionary bonus at the end of year from your manager. They don’t have as much leverage / decision making power over other parts of your comp.
I figured as much re: decision making power, the promo process is so rigid I assume I can’t just go waiving around a paper and get myself promoted / more money.
