Loath job - is 10-12 months enough time to move on w/o bad vibes?

Hate my job. Boss loves me. I hate them. I AM NOT STAYING. No hell, no way. However... One recruiter seems shocked I’m not even past the 1 year mark (I’m at 10 months). By the time the interview dust clears it will surely be 1 year on the dot. Is that not good enough? I’ve definitely done longer stints elsewhere. But I thought 1 year was a decent enough tenure not to blow my cred. Other details: I have 10+ yrs exp. and am getting recruiter hits from Facebook, Expedia, and Amazon.

Curious why you hate Tableau. It’s one of the few companies that has people that truly live working there.

Shitty management. Nuff said?

But your manager loves you?

How much of this is because your immediate manager vs general management?

The entire org is a rats den of sewage. Can we get back to the original question?

Expedia YeetCode May 15, 2018

Don't come to Expedia then

Its about how you sell the story, you can tell them that you are having to move since your wife changed jobs and the commute for you is too long.

Tableau hyrt46 OP May 15, 2018

So, make up a wife? A story? 1 year is bad?

Depends on the interviewer. If I were doing the interviewing, I’d need a good explanation for why you left, and why you won’t do the same when working with me.

Tableau hyrt46 OP May 15, 2018

What is considered a reasonable time that raises no eyebrows then?

WalmartLabs mitron May 15, 2018

One year at the least. Unless you have a good story why you are looking. I give the reason based on what product I want to work on and why

Intel SVsquash May 15, 2018

You said you are getting recruiter hits - if they are pursuing you, why is this an issue?

Tableau hyrt46 OP May 15, 2018

Right?! I am being asked if I am looking- I honestly say “yes” - then this one recruiter who contacted me gets all touchy about the “less then 1 year”. Wtf?

Tell them only passively considering. Recruiters like passive candidates.

Few thoughts: 1. 10 months means you joined July of last year. I would stay at least til January 1 then you can do the resume trick of 2017-2019. Leave out months. 2. If you must leave, 15 months as a minimum. Tableau is just too big to be considered a startup and unstable. 3. See if there’s something you can change. I didn’t like my job 10 months in. I loved my job 15 months in. Things change.

Tableau hyrt46 OP May 15, 2018

I doubt things will change for me- but I appreciate the insight you shared. Thanks for it!

All these questions are irrelevant if the goods are good. If you’re as good as you alluded to, who gives a shit if you left a shitty company before a year. Just don’t make a habit though. Do more research on your next job.
