Between the 2 cities which one would you choose? London pros: English speaking superior football league easier to integrate into London cons: more expensive no EU visa Berlin pros: EU visa less expensive Berlin cons: German speaking
London is more expensive, but it’s very much a case of you get what you pay for. If you can afford it, do London
“You get what you pay for” is certainly not the motto of London. It is more expensive and a really quite unpleasant place to live, especially after Brexit.
Not really tho.
I love mega cities so I would choose London
Berlin has much fewer high TC SWE jobs than London.
There are more tech opportunities in London, however the TC there is shit and often even lower than Berlin, even though cost of living is twice as much for half as much.
What? London TC lower than Berlin? That's impossible. Check levels.fyi.
There is simply no question: Berlin. I’ve lived in both places and I would go back to London if you 5x my TC. Make it 10x if you have a family. London is like the worst of Europe mixed with the worst of America. Shitty TC like Europe, shitty work/life balance like the US. And now it’s even worse because of Brexit. Your “pro” for English is not that much of a pro really, everyone worth talking to in Germany speaks English and they’re not dicks about it. In fact, it makes it hard to learn because they always go back to English with you. Integration in London is still harder in my experience because everyone has their own lives and isn’t really so keen to make friends with the new guy. In Berlin, you can go to expat meet ups with loads of English speakers who are actually keen to make friends and party. I don’t care about football, that probably is better. Everything else is worse.
He’s wrong. London is still better than Berlin ever will be. There’s a reason London has more tech investment than the other top 10 European cities combined.
Loads of investment is leaving the UK because of Brexit. If you are only concerned about career advancement and job opportunities, London is still going to be better though for a while at least. But if you care about anything else, Berlin.
OP you should specify your current nationality and how long you plan on being abroad. If you’re from an Anglo country it’ll be much easier to integrate into London. But if you’re just going for a few years, you might not care about integrating.
I’m from SF, in tech, living in Berlin - Berlin is an international city so the Anglo thing is not a big deal as I lived in London, too so there is no real difference - of course learn some German but this is the worst city to learn German in Germany
London is better. Unlike English, Germans are very reserved by nature. You will find it very, very difficult to integrate into German culture. If you are non- European, you will be seen as an outsider even if you have lived there for 20 years. If you have a choice, choose Netherlands. That’s the best option for you. Dutch are friendlier than Germans. They are very accepting of immigrants. You don’t have to learn Dutch. Most Dutch speak English. You will also have the benefit living in EU region.
Almost as many Germans speak English. The language really shouldn’t be an issue here.
Amsterdam is an amazing place and the Dutch are fantastic :) London is my #1 city in Europe (as a place to live and work) but AMS is definitely the #2
Hertha Berlin > Chelsea 😉
If you don’t speak German, or don’t want to learn, London by a very large margin. Don’t fall for the “everybody speaks English in Berlin, so it’s fine”. Whenever you have to deal with something from the government, it will be in German, everything in the city will be in German, it’s definitely much harder to live in a place where you don’t speak the language even tho people can speak English.
This is the harsh reality no matter how hard you market it as international city.
Berlin is in Germany so here is your answer. Worked with Germans and they are the worst stay away
Why?
Arrogant, they think they are smarter than everyone else
Why is an EU visa both pros and con for Germany? Depending on where you’re in life and your circumstances, the answer will be different. I personally would prefer Germany, despite possible integration difficulties. Having the potential of getting an EU passport is great if you decide to stay there long term. And you can always visit London on a weekend, it’s not far at all. Plus, you already speak English. Might as well challenge yourself a bit and acquire another language. That would be my thoughts personally.
