Anyone have tips or inspirational stories on meeting people and making friends in NYC? 29 year old single guy. Moved to the city from the bay area a few months ago. I'm usually busy with work/errands during the week but can't help but feel lonely during the weekends when I have nothing to do. I'm too anxious/skeptical about attending meetups on my own (I know I probably shouldn't be). People from work are nice but generally much younger/hard to get close to. Not much luck on dating apps either
Are you an immigrant? Americans have no such problem
I disagree. Plenty of Americans are lonely af.
Regardless, at most place, on average immigrant will have to work harder socializing ... because by the very nature it’s new to them and they are aliens to native. But, correlation doesn’t imply causation. I’m sure there are Americans who have difficulty socializing. And there are immigrants who are damn good at socializing.
Meetup can be a good way to find people with similar hobbies
I can help - dm.
You’re 29, people at work can’t be THAT much younger than you. Unless it’s a small company with all fresh college grads. Anyways, being in NYC doesn’t mean instant socialization. Just go outside find a hobby and meet people that way.
Find a sport, even if you don’t play well, there are social sports clubs that are good places to meet folks. Go to the bar, and hit on people, it’s a thing, I hear at least. Reach out to alumni or friends in the area... It takes a while, don’t worry you will settle right in. Welcome to NYC!
I went to a touristy restaurant by myself last weekend and sat at the bar and met a guy. He asked for my number and next time when he’s in town we’ll go out again. You just gotta put yourself out there.
Loneliness is a self created problem. Don’t do anything, just observe and be in the moment. This will pass too.
I thot nyc had a better social scene than the bay lol

How prestigious is databricks?
Get a roommate? Get a hobby? Play video games? Idk I spend most of my weekends alone just running errands or reading. I have way too much to do. Sometimes I grab a random guy off of tinder and I go on a date but those are a lot of effort sometimes especially if the guy is lazy/has no taste and take me on a boring coffee date at Starbucks. I don’t do those anymore. I’m a girl same age. For example today: I slept in, tried on some new pants and texted my gfs about what outfit I should be wearing with the pants, went to early dinner with roommate, got invited to some lingerie party with roommate and I was like umm sounds like it would be a bunch of dudes with boners so hard pass, went and got some lychee beers at the asian super market, went home and consumed said lychee beer, bought some new pants because decided the previous pants won’t work, and checked some random texts off Tinder and dumped a guy because he keeps on trying to get me to go on dates last minute (disrespectful...I’m not that lonely). Checked fb and flamed some random people that were arguing over scams about breeding fluffy dogs (probably could have skipped this step). Cleaned my closet a bit and packaged the pants up for return shipment. Now I’m on blind while taking a bath and next I’m gonna read a book (about wealth management) before going to bed. Tomorrow I’m going to sleep in again (depending on when I wake up) and maybe attend a local food festival. And then maybe go to the park with my dog. There is a lot to do on the weekends. Idk I’m an introvert. Also I’m a lazy ass, no where do I mention exercise. I used to exercise more and that EASILY takes up 2 hours of my day. I’m so busy entertaining myself I don’t have time to be lonely.
Hahaha, you got me at lychee beer. I need to try it, so sad I can't find it in Canada :(
Wow this is incredibly specific.
