The startup I work at is letting go of people, and I have limited time (2-3 months) to look for a new job on my visa. Currently I am a ML Engineer but I was looking for more research roles in the Industry anyway. I have 1, potentially 2 soon, papers at good conferences, and a MS from a good school. YoE 3.

Is it realistic of me to expect to get an ML Scientist role? Or ML Engineer roles that let me publish and do some research too? Potentially at a FAANG or similar company.

What’s your area of expertise? I work at Diffbot and a lot of our research focuses on NLP information extraction from the web.

Research Scientist roles are much harder to find now, AI research has slowly dried up since the peak in ~2016. Emphasis now is on ML Eng

And they are probably more selective now - reserved for PhDs, or at least that should be the min bar. I really don’t want to be in Academia, but it seems like that might increasingly be my only option to do research. I guess research + $$$ are not highly overlapping sets at this point for me and my profile.
