I'm looking to leave Seattle (and almost certainly Microsoft) and move to San Diego to be closer to people I care about. Timeline is within the next year, and reasonably flexible. I've done some initial searching and I'm worried most jobs would be a significant pay cut compared to Microsoft. I know of Qualcomm and Intuit that might pay me similarly, but the job market just isn't comparable to Seattle, with strong presence from Microsoft, Amazon, Google, etc. I'm certain I can get an offer at all, but I'm worried it'll be a step down from where I am now, in terms of pay and possibly my enjoyment. Suggestions of places to look into? I'm a primarily backed developer, but I've dabbled in almost full stack stuff. I like Microsoft and my job now. The ideal would be to continue doing about what I'm doing now, but in San Diego.
Amazon mainly. Qualcomm is in north San Diego, but with Microsoft on your resume, go with Amazon. Also look at OC.

Join Google Irvine and commute from San Diego. Thank me for getting best of both the working world and personal life later.
I'd love to work at Google, but Irvine is a pretty long commute. Do you think it's worth it even with 1-1.5 hours each way? And is there any commuting option that doesn't involve me behind the wheel? If I could do something during that time it would help.
There's a fair number of people who carpool. Podcasts or audiobooks work well, also, weather is great most of the year, and you can afford a great beach house in San Diego for a fraction of Bay area or Seattle prices to make up for the commute.
Amazon yes
TeraData for sure.
Have salaries improved in San Diego? When I worked for Qualcomm we referred to the lower salaries as the sunshine tax. Also have fun in fire season.
Sony also had swe positions in San Diego. A friend of mine works there.
And some PlayStation teams are at Sony SD, which seems like it would be a fun product to support
That's good to know. I'll look into Sony's presence in SD.
SAN Diego is so expensive... make good money and do almost okay or go somewhere cheaper and be rich 😂
No more expensive than Seattle, though I admit salaries aren't as good from what I've seen. Anyway, if I just wanted to be rich, I'd probably stay where I am or do as you said and seek something cheaper. I'm not doing this move for money, though I'm trying to reduce the financial impact.
You won't get rich living somewhere cheap

Amazon is there soon
I'll look into that, but tbh I'm not thrilled about amazon based on everything I've heard about working there.
amazon already has an office in san diego. we just haven’t moved to our permanent office yet
