    • Yeah I would say about top 10-20% of FANG engineers earn above $500k.

Finance doesn't pay very well in the tech industry, I don't think tech companies particularly want or care for finance talent beyond the highest level roles (i.e. CFO etc.), based on the fact we don't attract people from top schools in those roles (unlike for SWE).

In terms of pay scale, probably similar to marketing etc. roles.

the fact is, due to a variety of factors, certain types of organisations and specifc career paths within those orgs pay (what is to most people) a tonne of money.

there's no lie or joke. that's just standard state of affairs.

year-in, year-out there are people in core roles in high finance, big law, high tech, medicine, professional services etc etc making a tonne of money. sure the bar to get into those paths is pretty high but that doesn't change the pay.

look, only like ~30% of people have actual white collar jobs in most developed nations. of those people, the majority fall between $50-150k in income. a small proportion of these people (like the top 5-10% of all workers) are in these highly paying areas just due to the fact that they got hired (anyone else good enough to get those jobs would have gotten it and could easily replace them).

so the point is, stop saying things are lies and start becoming what it takes to cross the bar to the high paying job world.

blind is, by virtue of the platform, mostly full of people who crossed that bar. if we consider the bar to be the top X%ile of individuals, then no shit it's not going to be representative

This should be renamed into "realistic TC". I can relate to these numbers.

I have been through the early 90s recession, late 90s internet craze and 2007 financial crisis. Companies and technology that are cool now will be irrelevant in few years. Your comp will likely suffer. I made $250k-$300k as IC for 20 years and now settling, because no one hires a 50 year old coder, even if they know ML/AI.
Luckily my unearned income is much higher than earned income so I am not hustling for TC.
PSA: make all you can, save all you can, get multiple sources of income.

I see, thanks. And great advice, everyone ignores ageism till it hits them personally.

I love this thread. I’ve been at this 15+ years and spent a long time making shit money and then eventually “solid” money and now what I think is absurd, but what the market will bear (and even then on the low-end for Blind). The whole culture of Blind is a self-aggrandizing circle jerk and unhealthy in large measure, so for those made to feel like shit it’s wonderful that folks are willing to share what are likely far more common salary ranges in the industry. Some of the high TCs may be something to aspire to (and some are bullshit) but definitely don’t feel like you’re a failure for not having reached it, especially with just a couple years of experience.
