Microsoft low balls industry hires. This is a well known fact. To all the managers: Do you think we are fucking fools who can't read what is written on Blind? Your good industry hires will not stick around in Microsoft because of this. Microsoft needs to lose good industry hires when the project is at a crucial time to understand the cost of doing this. Fuck you Microsoft hiring managers. I hope you and your fellow EM/PMs feel the heat when we leave.
Everyone does that. People do leave all the time and nobody gives two hoots. You need to calm your socks.
Not necessarily, I was an industry hire at Microsoft before and I negotiated the hell out, especially the stocks and bonus components almost doubled them, and I didn't even have a counter offer
You understand how a business works? Human capital is the largest cost to any employer. They want to pay you the least amount they can get away with. Clearly, people are taking the âlow-ballâ offers and hence itâs working. If you donât want to have such offers, get a competing offer. Itâs a free market. If youâre going for a higher rate, theyâll pay more. Explain to me this: would you buy a Tesla for 35k when the going rate is 30k? No. Same with businesses.
Fair enough.
There is one point that you didnât address and that is Microsoft gives new grads up to $150k in stock for L59 but if you come as industry hire as L61 you might be offered $75k. Canât get the logic behind that
Had a recent verbal from a large public company that was paying bank last year. This year, not so much. Turned down a title increase, maybe 15% TC increase (it was inline with levels.fyi) since Iâd be expected to work about 2x where my own projects weâll cover that 15%. Pushed back on numbers, but an agreement wasnât reached.
How big of a role do hiring managers play in the offer numbers? As opposed to a "comp committee" that recruiter talks to.
Msft hasn't paid market rate for years, they seem to be doing just fine if not very well...
They have plenty of people taking those offers. The good people also get promoted, make more and stay.
I will be joining Microsoft soon. Yoe: 5.5 TC : 280K level: L64
Microsoft is not a growing company, so they mostly don't need industry hires, which is why they are not aggressive in their offers for them. They are aggressive in their college hiring, which is mostly where they get all backfills from.
Industry hire?
Lateral hires ... folks with experience
So that means most hires? Or do u mean people changing fields?
