Evil Amazon Interviewer

I had a final round of interviews for a PMT role at Amazon. The product is supposed to make the experience of Amazon employees better. The interviewer spent 10 minutes boasting about how well Amazon treats its employees and how great the benefits are and that's why they want to develop this product (my benefits are way better currently). He specifically mentioned the employees working in warehouses and how high their job satisfaction levels are, but the team wants to "push the boundaries" of success and increase their satisfaction so they can be the "most productive version of themselves". He also said that Amazon doesn't discriminate between blue collar and white collar workers.

The funniest part was probably when he took a few minutes to make fun of the term WLB by saying that work is part of our lives and he doesn't understand why WLB is even a term in English. He ended his pitch by saying that in Seattle they have a saying, "If you want to work a little and relax, go to Google, if you want to retire, go to Microsoft, but if you want to solve challenging problems and accomplish as much as people accomplish in 20 years in just 5, then come to Amazon".

Ngl he really sold me on this team lol

Wonder if this guy would jump off a bridge if Amazon told him they needed data to train their ML models for sad employees

Been living and working at Amazon in Seattle for 5 years, but I haven’t heard that last saying ever.

Coming to the treatment of warehouse workers, it’s publicly documented Tim Bray quit over this.

The WLB bit seems to be regurgitated bullshit that Bezos had once said, work life harmony.

Don’t get swayed by people wrapping up toxic culture as macho culture. There’s nothing good about expecting people to work extra hours, the lack of benefits and other things

There are a lot of good things about working at Amazon. Most people get surprised with how much ownership you get. At L6 levels, your job can be whatever you want, from pushing new initiatives, to finding current bottlenecks, etc

    • I am sure Amazon helps you develop a lot, but I can't deal with lunatics like this guy, so at least this team is definitely a no go for me

This interviewer is a huge red flag. It is true that you can get more work done at Amazon vs Microsoft or Google, but THAT IS EXPECTED. It's not because AMZN ppl are smarter/more efficient, it's because the culture is more pragmatic

Don't think that you're crushing because you're "doing more than you normally would elsewhere". Just saying.
