Interviewed with doordash for their NYC office recently. Since it was closer to the holiday season I decided to stay in the city for a week at my own expense and asked if doordash would be okay with just paying for the flight. FYI, I made it clear that I wasn't asking doordash to pay for food and lodging for any part of my travel. The coordinator who is responsible for making my travel arrangements suggested that I take a one way flight closer to the interview date. I tried talking sense to the coordinator that paying for a one way trip makes no sense and that if I reimburse my hotel and food expenses it's going to be more expensive than a round trip flight. After involving my hiring manager, I had my travel cleared. Now after the interview, the coordinator hasn't approved my expense claim stating that that only my fight expenses were agreed upon and that I should have to pay taxi expenses (to/ from airport ) out of pocket.

I'm getting the feeling that combining leisure with interviewing was a bad idea. Has anyone had a similar situation before? What did you do to resolve it?

You expect a company that steals tips from drivers and overcharges customers to compensate you for travel? LOL

They should start including common sense questions in LC.

Honestly the way you described the situation “just my flight” I assumed it was just your flight. When I got to the problem I expected them to not want to pay the return way. Taxis don’t make me think of the flight. They might have wanted you to do something specific (some companies have partnerships with Lyft/Uber for example) or expected you to take public transport.

Combining leisure with interviewing does give a bit of a weird impression. Some part of them might think “did you actually want the job? Or a free flight to NYC?”

Any reason you didn't take the train like a normal person? Even assuming they'd reimburse your taxi fare, a figure that high makes it look like you're taking advantage of their hospitality.

Sounds like you made kind of a mess with the entire deal , should have asked for flights around the dates you want and covering 2 nights and keep it simple
I had a really Good experience with them coming from nyc to sf to interview.
