L5, 205k base I'm asking for a family member: "I already have an offer at Uber and am trying to negotiate the right level. What level should I take? I have 9 years of experience as a software engineer but with startups outside of Silicon Valley that are not well-known and have less competition. In my last role I was tech lead and architect, which was around L5.5 for them, but for a small team and didn't have to deal with cross-org impact. If I can negotiate L5a at Uber, then I'll get more comp but much higher expectations, which may be harder to navigate given that larger companies have much more politics and require cross-team impact. If I stick with a L4 (even though I believe I'm L5a), then this can hurt me in the short-term since it would be a bit of a downgrade and I would miss out on negotiating higher RSUs. However, it would be easier adjusting and maybe I can get a promo in 6-12 months (while missing out on higher RSUs but nice bump in the base). How likely can a promo happen in that time frame? I can also try to negotiate the L5a offer by getting a counter-offer in the next week which is already in my pipeline. " Thank you
"The TC difference well be around 25-30%. Would you be ok downgrading the income? Plus if you are joining now, you are probably positive of Ubers future. So you probably assume that Uber stock will grow at last 50% in four years. Suppose you lose out on 150k worth of stock for L4 compared to L5a. In four years your loss will grow to 225K. Apart from that, your yearly refreshers will take a hit. Also, promotion does not bring your RSU at par with initial L5A offer."
What are the expectations of lv5a at Uber? Are there cases of getting a promo in the first year?
you cannot negotiate level. /thread
You can interview for a particular level though.
You can get L4 with 2 yoe at Uber based on my experience for sure, and iirc another 2 years you can get L5. You are definitely down leveled.
Take 5a. Should be easy for you based on your background
Take the L4 and impress
