I planned this surprise 30th birthday weekend in South Lake Tahoe for my spouse. I had 4 couples and 5 kids under 3 years of age coming. Week of trip I find out the air quality in Tahoe is considered hazardous, so I ask my host for a complete refund. He tells me I'll have to reschedule trip or call Airbnb for full refund. So, I call Airbnb and guess what they tell me?!?!? Airbnb needs permission from the host to provide full refund, since it's a strict cancellation policy. Mind you, I booked this trip months in advance without considering the wild fires that are occurring as we speak.
Airbnb doesn't consider hazardous air quality an extenuating circumstance and cannot provide me the full refund. There is no way I'm having a pregnant woman, 5 kids under 3 yrs old and an adult with severe adult asthma stay in those types of conditions.
I messaged the host to let him know that I didn't appreciate being lied to and he proceeded to call me and yell at me over the phone. I told him to stop yelling several times and then hung up on him after he started swearing. So I called Airbnb and told them I was being harassed by my host. They told me they would escalate this issue and never called me back. After calling them 5-6 times and 3 dropped calls, I finally got a specialist telling me that they have to look into it. It's been over a week already!! This "harassment specialist" is giving me push back on providing resolution.
I'm at the point where I want to get a damn lawyer involved. I don't take harassment and putting my friends and loved ones in unsafe hazardous circumstances to appease a damn host who's too cheap to do the right thing. Everyone in South Lake Tahoe has been told to evacuate and I'm still having to fight this issue.
I cannot believe how bad Airbnb's customer service has gotten after Covid. This isn't the way to treat your customers. Allowing your host to call their potential guests and berate them over the phone. It is beyond not okay!
What should I do? Anyone know a lawyer that would consider my case?
