Lyft L5 vs Two Sigma vs Snap for new grad

Dec 22, 2019 26 Comments

TC: Two Sigma ~ Snap > Lyft L5.
Interviewers: Lyft L5 >> Two Sigma > Snap.
Location: Two Sigma (NYC) > Snap (LA) > Lyft L5 (Palo Alto).

I don’t really want to optimize for TC as a new grad, yet I think that joining Lyft might be a bit risky: AV is just a special project for Lyft. It's gone public and if the company starts bleeding the first ones to be shown the door would be such special projects.

Overall AV seems to be an interesting place to explore but I would rather work on launching new features to a customer facing product. Finance is OK but I think I’ll have to work on the infra as a non-quant.

Note: I did get some other offers and the highlight was Nuro’s trash TC: why do so many smart people work there & people here generally like the company (e.g., Nuro somehow won the poll here: "Nuro vs. Cruise vs. Lyft L5 intern offers” which is a complete joke)? The recruiters are great but I would not even bother even interviewing there. I don’t think they’ll go public anytime soon either.

Share your offer amounts, no one is going to help you if you refuse to help others.

What are the offer amounts? Even if you don’t care you can still give back to the blind community by letting us know the offers in exchange for advice

Had doubts moving from FB to TS, now would recommend TS over the others. I will say that your experience at TS can vary wildly based on your team, so evaluate the team you’re joining carefully.

Two Sigma is a bit of hit and miss in my opinion it pays more than FAANG but not as much as hft firms. From my knowledge quant swe work on writing things like data pipelines and swe work on writing custim mesos implementation. Both are decent problems but from my knowledge they dont scale as much as tech and dont have 100k qps so problems are not as challenging as big tech imo. I would work on hfts or just tech as an swe rather than work at hf.

As a new grad you’ll learn a lot anywhere you go that’s halfway decent, but we have pretty good new grad mentoring. I feel like it’s more of a question of what city you want to live in and what type of lifestyle you want to have. Since those three places are quite different.

The offer I got as new grad is higher in cash then Lyft L5, but since its private it's hard to say how good stock is. What are your numbers OP?
