17% layoffs, 5% furloughed. I think Uber started this yesterday. Won’t be surprised if FAANG stop hiring altogether at some point this year. https://www.cnbc.com/2020/04/29/lyft-lays-off-17percent-of-workforce-furloughs-hundreds-more.html
The best engineering is useless against the bad business model that cannot weather the storm. The financial literacy is important.
The only safe businesses at the moment are morgues, Netflix, Amazon and grocery stores. Businesses plan for economic crises, no business plans for pandemics
What about health tech?
Layoff drivers or engineers?
They can’t lay-off drivers since they’re not employed by Lyft. They are classified as ICs - independent contractors with the firm.
They are required to be classified as full time employee with benefits by law in some countries and states
This is crazy even if it is kinda expected. I really hope this whole thing can be over ASAP. I hope our life can be back to normal ASAP.
You can hope all you want, but I’m pretty sure that life won’t be normal for at least another year.
well, this is part of life. there is no such thing called "life that is always normal"
Sad to hear that great folks at Lyft are impacted. If anyone knows folks who are hiring, point them towards www.parachutelist.com. There are 96 incredible Lyft employees affected by the layoff on the site.
Facebook is hiring actually more than ever right now.
I recently joined Glossier, an e-commerce company focussed on beauty products. We just set up a new office in Seattle and we are hiring engineers and engineering managers across all levels. If anyone is impacted or know someone please who might be looking for a new role, please DM me. I would be happy to chat.
