Targeting to high T5 - starting T6 eng level. Had my onsite and now recruiter asks for my salary or comp expectations. I don't want to share numbers because suspect they would be used to low-ball me. What is the real range Lyft offers? What is the best way to respond?
Just take what you make now and double it
If I tell them my expectation is 600k TC they may not give me any offer. 2x formula seems to be too aggressive. Or I'm wrong?
I mean, if you blew the interview out of the water and they really want you, the worst is you go with what they originally offered. T5-T6 is decently high up there afaik. Maybe 1.5x @ 450k or a bit higher at 500k?
Best option is to have another offer which is competitive. I’d expect 150-200. Even if they low ball you it is reasonable to ask for more.
I am interviewing with a few places and they all want to know this information before giving the offer. My goal is to make them not low balling me.
I am in eng, and was honest about my current number and expectations (where the expectation was higher). I was given a fair offer, which was higher in salary than my expectation, then negotiated pretty closely to my equity expectations. If you are not comfortable giving your current salary, just give your expectations.
I would add that you should never give your current salary. In SF, it'll soon be illegal anyways for them to ask. Always give your expectations, it's what they are really asking anyways.
Do you mind sharing rough numbers?
They shouldn't low ball you but use your best judgement. If they seem like they know their stuff and are straight shooter then open up with market offers so at least they can try to beat it. If you have no offers, didn't interview amazing but did well and make shit for money you'll get a standard offer. A recruiter who is really good at what they do and has engineering leaders ears will be able to get more for you if you crushed the interview and have a great background.
T5 would be 300-400 TC. What was your google level?
Recently concluded negotiating with Lyft. Happy to share tips and numbers over PM
You have to get the question in first. Since you didn't look on Glassdoor to see if there are any reviews for the same role, company and location that inc TC. If it is an agency recruiter they should be trying to push the TC for you so remind them of that before you answer. Definitely have the conversation by phone rather than email or LinkedIn. If they're internal they should have a range so just ask for it before you tell them even if they asked you first. Remember even if they tell you the range you can still get more. If you already have a job tell them you will loose a bonus if you leave now and that should bump the range if you think it's to low.
I would stress to ask for their range first and then rebalance your expectation to be above it. I fell for this with Lyft and when they gave a good offer above expectations, I couldn’t help but feel I shot myself in the foot by low balling myself.
