I recently accepted a Sr. UX Design position at Microsoft. After completing my background check form, I realized that my degree doesn't match my resume/Microsoft's candidate portal. I graduated 10 years ago with a Bachelor's degree in Communication Studies. I followed a mass media/advertising track that would not be apparent on a background check. On my PDF resume I list: Bachelor's degree: Communications/Advertising (to save space... Which seems so stupid now) On Microsoft's employee portal: Mass Communication Media Studies (they didn't have a generic Comm Studies option) I'm starting to freak out that this is going to be flagged. I set up a call with my recruiter this week to discuss, but any other recommendations would be appreciated! TC: 200k
I wouldn’t worry about it and wouldn’t really consider this lying. If you said you majored in airspace engineering when in fact you majored in English literature that’s a different story. Background checks may flag an inconsistency but it is easily explained.
It would be an issue if you said you majored in computer science, but actually was a communications major. In your case, I don’t see it being a big deal at all. This isn’t lying 😊.
Said majored in networks, but have communication degree would be (non)technically correct 😉🤣🤣
Noone will care
Don’t worry about it. Inconsequential
Is this thread indicative of our anxious generation?
Absolutely 😅
If they hired you as sr UX, it’s very unlikely that your degree was a larger hiring factor than your in-person interactions.
Yeah, that's enough to get your offer pulled and get blacklisted by MSFT if they feel petty enough to do so. If not now, you always risk getting caught and you probably will. Use this as a learning experience. Hope I am wrong. I have seen offers yanked for less.
And you know this because ... ? Getting caught about what exactly? A different description of the same major? OP isn’t applying to medical school, OP is getting a job as a UX designer.
Doesn't matter what kind of job it is. I saw it happen to others.
I think you'll be fine. I've seen people lie and say they had a CS degree when in fact they had a business degree with a CS concentration. Huge difference.
Non issue. Not even worth discussing.
