Lying on the offer letter

Apr 2 8 Comments

I have never had this issue, but just curious if some company can promise something on the offer letter, and refuse to actually fulfill it after you join the company?

  • No. Anything in offer letter is legal and binding. Even though, companies put a clause of reserving rights to alter terms of employment, it’s a silly move from any employer and have never heard or read anyone doing so.
Be careful of verbal commitments. Usually don’t work out, which is why they are not putting it in paper..

Say they vaguely mention that you can have vacation up to xx days. But after you join, they tell you to get that you have to work for them for at least y years. etc

    • Generally you won't get that on paper. Usually a verbal thing but I would clear it with the hiring manager and put the time in workday or whatever your first week. Just ask what the company policy is.

    • Just ask what is the standard policy. Lot of companies these days share a standard brochure of benefits which lists vacations and tenure clauses for additional leave loading options.

Not really much. If it is early enough you can call it out and basically restart negotiation. Otherwise, just look elsewhere.
