Hi,

Can someone explain exactly how HC at Google operates? After each interviewer submits their feedback what happens next? Who decides whether to offer a position, what level, what comp package?

And then when negotiating the salary, which loops does it have to go though?

Thanks!

It's a committee of volunteers that review interview packets assembled by the recruiter. This includes your interview feedback as well as an optional letter of support from a HM if you've already gone through team matching. They give the hire/no hire decision and at which level. Comp is separate from HC.

I've never participated in HC so I can't say definitively. My impression is you can overcome a LNH (leaning no hire) if other rounds were strong and with HM recommendation + likely downlevel. There are also other factors like interviewer past calibration that are taken into consideration.

Google’s Hiring Committee is farce. Google still has outdated processes and they take pride in it. What a shame!

FYI a HM who serves on HC told me that he never looks at resumes/YoE until after determining level from interview performance, and rarely will adjust leveling afterwards.

This is why someone with many years of strong real world experience but 5 hours of so-so interview performance will get down leveled.

There are comp analysts that propose the comp to the comp committee. Usually based on internal band for the level + your location + your competing offers + whether your HM may have special signoff from their VP for going over for an urgent hire. The formula is unknown but usually they won't deviate from band.

So let me get this straight, the interviewers are NOT in the meeting that makes the hire no hire decision? So essentially the candidate’s future rests is at the mercy of the English essay writing of the feedback writer? And we know how articulate nerds can be!!! Only at Google!! Lol

There is no debate, committee can ask for clarifications offline from the hiring manager, thats it, very outdated process

What a screwed up process. I am surprised they haven’t been sued by some candidates, when they are interviewed by folks who struggle with spoken English, and you know are going to completely screw up their written feedback. Writing feedback is hard for folks proficient in spoken English. Others don’t have a chance. I guess these shenanigans are another example of Googlyness???!!!
