It is nothing like you think it is going to be. It just sucks. I'm in a dire state with mental health taking a toll, waiting to get PIPed and hoping I don't die before. People have no ethics, camaraderie, they don't help, people are just robots wagging their tails to their managers, don't even get me started if you get a bad manager which happens almost all the time - thanks to the shitty LPs managers hide their a$$es. Take my advice, join somewhere else. There is more to life than money and prestige.
Switch teams or apply to another company. The reason why these teams continue to exist with these dynamics is because the employees are complicit in acting like slaves. Don’t continue to dread every waking minute while waiting for PIP or death. Leave.
This is not the reason that the culture exists. It exists because managers are never held accountable for being bad managers. I’d bet my life’s salary that any exit interviews will mention bad management for those that are actually honest in their exit interviews, so the cycle will continue with churn of IC employees amid terrible people management. Something has to be done at a higher level to actually change management level people
I didn’t say it’s why the culture was created. I’m saying it is a contributing factor for why it continues to exist. The pessimist in me agrees with you, that if one employee leaves, another will just take its place. But the optimist in me thinks if enough employees leave and fracture a bad manager’s ability to have a team with meaningful contributions to the org, it could result in that manager being let go. That’s not to say that there aren’t built-in systems at amazon or other large companies that also encourage this behavior. But if OP has the mentality of just waiting for PIP or death, he’s a part of the problem. He needs to leave and ideally encourage his teammates to leave as well.
But they have principles!
It is so ironic that managers are considered leaders at Amazon but they are rarely PIP'ed for doing poorly on 14 LP. Instead, the engineers are aggressively thrown under the bus to meet PIP targets with cases built on pretext reasons. Amazon has a lot of shady managers. Since those managers are the management, HRBP protects them and this attracts more shady managers at Amazon.
Switch teams. Been at Amazon over 3 years so I've seen many teams, it's all about the team. If this team is bad please switch to a better one
Switch teams. I'm on a team for nearing 2 years now that has nothing of what you're describing.
How long you been there?
How easy is it to switch teams? What’s the process like?
Just message hm of job posting and do internal interview (whatever the hm wants to do) can just be a 30 min talk. Then after they offer you give current manager 2 week notice. From what ive geard. Havent done it myself.
As long as your new HM wants you (they usually do) and you are not in dev list (you usually aren’t), it’s pretty ez
Definitely switch teams. My experience at Amazon has been awesome.
Your attitude is wrong. Everything you said is true, but amazon isn’t for people who want to join a company and stay long term. The expectation is people who work at amazon are motivated enough to want to work long hours and learn as much as they can. As Soon as the learning stops you switch teams. Amazon isn’t the company you retire in working 30 hours a week. It’s meant to hang onto those who are either very good or are striving to learn as much as they can, which generally means those people are working 50-80hours a week
Switch teams OP! My experience is the complete opposite of yours. Everyone in my team is friendly, supportive and helpful to each other. My manager is awesome and very supportive. Switch teams asap!
With your first statement being true, i will go ahead with the worst expectations possible.
