American considering move to Canada

Feb 28, 2020 28 Comments

Considering moving from the US to Vancouver, Canada. Primay motivations are for better access to skiing and mountain biking.

I wanted to get an idea of what my salary might look like after the move. I Currently live in a mid tier city and am a L63 @ Microsoft. what would my salary look like if i were to move?

A few more questions:
- If im working for a US team while in CA, is it possible to remain in the US payroll?
- I expect to take a pay cut with this move. Will my money go further in Vancouver than, say, Boston?
- Has anyone else done a similar move? what was your experience like? How has your quality of life been? Any major tax implications?
- Any experience with visas or residency support through Microsoft? How does this translate for my husband?

Much higher tax, much lower salary, higher cost of living. Vancouver is a nicer city but thereโ€™s a reason the migration is going in the opposite direction.

If the cycle continues (foreign $$$ keeps pouring in), there's no reason to think there are will be a crash. Miami home prices were initially driven up by Latin investors, drug Lord's and mafias buying properties in cash to park $$. 2008 caused a catastrophic crash but that was global. Until that point there was no crash. If theres no global crash, no reason to think Vancouver will have a regional crash

    • I recall Vancouver starting to (or perhaps only considering) restrict foreign property investment to curb the rise in prices. I havenโ€™t been following it closely but I could see that kind of a law lowering the overall cost of home ownership in Vancouver.

Not so much a crash as a correction.

  • Vancouver is great place, nice people. But that's all. Forget about earning enough or saving. Huge tax bill, lower pay.

Why not live in Seattle and commute to Vancouver periodically for what you want to do? It's a 2.5 hr drive (get Nexus) and the US $ will go farther than earning CDN $.

    • When weโ€™re you here? There have been huge changes in the past 2 years with many new trail miles planned in the next 2-3

    • Iโ€™ve been at either Amazon or Microsoft since 2016 and have been coming up about once per quarter.

Edit: the biking is decent there I will admit, you just have to drive for it. But the skiing, not so much.

    -Most likely no
-About the same.150k CAD in Vancouver is about the same quality of life as 150k USD in Boston/LA/Denver etc MINUS housing costs
-Never seen any American move here for a tech job.Work culture is pretty much similar in bigger US companies
-Visas to Canada are incredibly easy to get

Honestly if you want to enjoy mountains why not Colorado/Utah/etc? Vancouver as such will offer nothing in terms of career/ life unless thereโ€™s a specific ski slope you want to hit
