MBA

I have 10 years of experience in IT, mostly being jack of trades with no expert level confidence in any technology. Always wanted to do an MBA but never really felt the need due to a well paying job. Recently joined Amazon, I feel like shit because I suddenly realize I don’t belong in tech world. Having second thoughts of MBA again, but now it’s more challenging due to a dependent wife and kid. Any word of advice?

You won’t learn much in MBA. I would recommend trying Product management within amazon.

If you do it from a good school, you will see the ROI. And if you want to grow in a management position, the network you will build during your MBA will help you a lot. I have never heard anyone regret doing an MBA. Have you considered a part time MBA? Given you have dependent family members, part time will give you some flexibility. If you always wanted to do it, and you have the means to, then go for it!

Will Amazon pay for it?

You could be a business centric Product Manager. It is difficult to do a legit tech job or even Technical Product Management with MBA background. I do not see enough ROI on it unless you are working for a Wall street company, a management consulting company or a company where they value business focused Product managers.
