I will be moving to Redmond for a job at Microsoft as a SWE soon. I am considering doing an MBA to move into the the PM zone. Any ideas/experiences/suggestions about good MBA programs in the area or even those which support online classes?
University of Phoenix.
Nope. Degrees from for profit schools are worthless, don’t waste your time!
University of Washington has good programs
PM? Depends on what bar level you want. I don't really recommend any MBAs in the WA state. You can always get a quality study and do your effort to make the best out of your MBA regardless of where you go, but you take less risks by going to an Ivy League or a top West coast school like Berkeley or Stanford Your career, man
Makes sense. Thanks!
MBA from a school like UoW can decrease the value of your resume. Also, you don't need an MBA to become a PM.
I agree. Although, I think I’d need an MBA to become a PM at most companies. Microsoft being an exception.
Lol wtf are you talking about? It’s #21 in the country. I agree with you that MBA isn’t necessary, but in no way would it decrease the value of your resume. From a pragmatic stance, note that MBA grads enter at L61. I’m a non-MBA non-engineer entering as L62 next month.
Top tier schools are a good chance to network and learn. Middle and bottom tier schools like u of Phoenix are just a time consuming piece of paper that might not help your career that much. If you are not attending a top 25 school, better to invest in credentials that get you the PM jobs...
Funny to read recommendations and opinions about whether it would improve value of CV or not as well as career opportunities after MBA from folks who obviously havent got MBA. :))) Think this way- if you believe you need the skillset to transition to PM role, just improve soft skills etc. it's worth doing it. In case if you think that just the fact that you did MBA will make you a better pitch for PM, that's not true. Also keep in mind that it will eat two years and you will not start at a senior position after, as all MBAs usually are considered meat and get in at same level. On the bright side, this is amazing experience and you will meet a ton of new friends as well as know more folks who have very different background. Now, regarding schools, Foster MBA program at UW has higher placement rates than any Ivy League school for companies in Seattle area. It's a decent program and a decent school if you are planning to be in Seattle. If you want to look for other destination after graduation, you will need a larger school, as Foster doesnt have a lot of power outside of Seattle. Also costs for it as for resident in the area will be significantly lower than for schools that could give you similar job opportunities (I am not a Foster grad myself :) )
UW is a great option...
On a side note, for those not having the luxury of quitting their jobs, Smartly MBA/EMBA programs could be a great option - of course not comparable with traditional MBAs, but still showing a great alumni list. Thinking of applying for it next year.

Feared this. What would you do in this situation?
If employer pays then take a non top mba. Otherwise, it’s hard for me to recommend top mba at current costs. I’ve seen people doing top emba with success, but the price tag is so steep I’d never do it myself out of pocket. There’s this thing called PMP which is useful in government contracting, cheap. Also I wouldn’t go for mba to do pm. I’d only use it to change field
