Question about women in their 30’s?
Hoping to get your opinion here... MY QUESTION: Should I spend time getting a.... 1) MS in Cybersecurity 2) MS in Comp Sci 3) MBA maybe with a focus on Technology MY GOAL: I'm interested in climbing the ladder and eventually getting a CISO or maybe even CIO role one day. I have an employer who will pay for education so why not. MY BACKGROUND: - Bachelors degree from a State school in MIS - 10 YoE in technical IS IC roles, 2 YoE as a manager of technical IS ICs - all this at F100 companies - Already have 6 certs including CISSP and CISM I've gone through the LI profiles of many prominent CISOs and see very few MBAs. Most common degree is a MS in Cyber. Thank you for your input! #cybersecurity #security #manager
Leetcode and crack E5 with 10yoe. Perform well and move up to manager.
I'm already a manager. I'm interested in moving up the management ladder.
I think it depends on the company you would like to move up in. Does the company value people management skills or security thought leadership? I think in Microsoft, people management is more valued than technical ability at higher levels of management. Also for CISOs in non-tech industries I think the same is true. So an MBA might make more sense. That said, I am not a ciso and have no desire to move up in management, so take what I say with a grain of salt.
Also fwiw from my perspective, a lot of people who are successful in security used to work I high level positions in the US government (DHS, FBI, NSA, DARPA, etc) and then jumped back to private sector.
A very wise Msft mentor told me thus when I asked the same question: think of the opportunity cost, not $ when considering school. Publish papers, present at conferences, build networks of fans. I listened, left ms to eventually become a vp and boomerang back here. Security field... Ymmw
did you complete PhD or published papers and presented while working for some company other than MS?
No, no PhD. Presented at 50 conferences, published case studies. Stayed wit my bachelor.
What did you end up pursuing?
MBA from a decent school
