Hello.
What's better, being offered a base of 100k at level 6B or 6A at GM?
Is there any difference?
It's the same bonus at 10%.

  • 100k at 6B will likely mean that you will be in the upper range of the salary band. The implications of this is that your salary increases will be lower (even if you perform at a high level).

    100k at 6A means you will be slightly above the median pay for that pay band therefore you have better chances of getting bigger salary increases if you perform or are perceived to perform at a high level.

    As you mentioned, the bonus % is the same for both.

    • These are just pay bands, now, GM classifies employees as Engineers for those in the Level 6 pay-band and below and senior engineers for those in the Level 7 pay-band.

      Level 8s are engineering managers and some technical leads (super experienced engineers).

      Within Level 6 (A or B) it really does not matter in terms of responsibilities however once you hit Level 7, your are expected to be a lead engineer or someone that can work under minimal to no supervision so expectations go up.

  • Depending on your experience, I wouldn't take 6A for the below.
    1. 100K for 6B is top band.
    2. If you hit the limit they/GM have no other option than to promote you to 6A which can get you a decent hike 7-15 % - again depending on how you perform.

    Stay in the top band.
    (Edit) - it is easier to get 6B to 6A than 6A to 7B.

    • In theory this is true but if you end up with a bad manager (like I did), you’d be stuck in that level with low salary increase.

    • Good or Bad manager is beyond our control. Do your best.
      Few tips on managing a bad manager.
      1. Get months feedback as part of your 1-1 and send meeting mins.
      2. Reach out to other managers and setup 1-1 and get their feedback.
      3. Setup Quarterly meeting with Skip level.

      Best of all : move to different team by applying to 6A roles.
