Has anyone been or heard of anyone being upleveled at Google? Aka being L3 at previous company but getting an L4 offer, etc. How often does this happen?

Asking for a friend for SWE, since I don’t know much about it

    I guess if Google does not know the person's level at the current company and the person happens to ace it in the interview, it could certainly happen why not

    Of course. Every company does that.
    Multiple examples of U5a -> G6. More examples of -> F6. Higher levels are rare because of fewer openings and relying more on networking.

    Every time when you are on market, the market will recalibrate you, your comp and your level.

      How does this even make sense? Unless the comps the L6 comp beat out google. But even then you lose positioning

      A “bulk” g7 offer is slightly lower than f6. Same thing for g6 and f5. But if you are recognized as a “special talent”, G offer beats everyone.

      E.g. two recent data points for two infra guys:
      G6: 250k/20%/1.5m
      G7: 290k/25%/1.9m

      Don’t expect this for you. 9x% new hires get the “bulk” offers which can be easily beaten by many other companies.

  • Yes, I've seen this happen with a friend who had 1.5 YoE at a small unknown startup. Thought he was interviewing for L3, ended up getting an L4 offer.
