Layoffs everywhere. Who is safe? Who isn't?
TL,DR: If a company does lay off, does specific sectors within it get affected (like sales, engineering, marketing, finance etc)? If yes, which are safe and which aren't?
----
With layoffs happening at many places, recently hearing about Uber's layoff plans, seems like there could be layoffs at other big tech companies too.
Among this situation of layoffs, do all sectors get hit hard or specific sectors?
Seems to me that sectors like sales and marketing would be the most affected and engineering would be on the safer side.
Can someone experienced confirm how layoffs work and is the sector based analysis of risk of layoffs is correct?
PS. My post is more centred around comparing sectors within a company. Lets say a big tech company X is going to do layoffs. Please look at the above points in that context.
