MS 65 -> L6 SDM YOE: over 15 years , a few being manager, topish performer today. Family with small kid. MS TC: ~ 330k assuming decent performance over the next 4 years (TC includes benefits as taken from the “modeler tool” ) At MS I am not doing anything “super” interesting. Amzn: high 300s TC Thoughts on switching ? Heard is all the horror stories but willing to take a chance and try / learn something new. Scared of not being able to interview my way back into MS (not great at leetcode) Commute time will increase from 12 mins to 40 mins one way.
Where in amzn?
what role are you in ? How much more are you working now ? 20% 30% ?
Location ? Microsoft tc break down ?
Seattle As an example , next year Base: 180 ish Stock unvested:~ 50 to 60k New stock assume I do ok: 30 to 40k Bonus assume ok perf: 30 to 45 k Benefits: ~35k ( health , 401k, espp, pro club :) )
do people always count benefits towards TC?
Commute differential is only reason I would hesitate. Can you ride bus or are you gonna drive?
Going to drive. Need to drop kid at day Care
Not worth it
What is the modeler tool?
Probably a “pay modelling” tool. We have one at intc. It shows base pay plus stock vesting payout plus bonuses and a dollar amount for benefits
65 -> L6 is good move, if you work hard, real good shot at getting to L7 (I have talked to 3 folks from MSFT who did similar move).. L66 is a no man's land.. too senior to get to L6, but a bit junior to get to L7..
Sounds like you should, and want to try. Just keep in mind Amazon's "try" is >3 yes because of shitty vesting
Don’t
Let me repeat what he said - Don't!
Don't do it. Ohh, just don't.
