Thinking of doing an online masters in cs at Georgia tech or uiuc. Thought process is: brand name uni, extra padding on my resume, gain skills. I plan to move to US in 2024 (will get Canadian citizenship by then). Hopefully this also helps in opening doors to jobs for intermediate to senior positions. For getting into more senior positions at companies (EM, leading both engineering and product roles etc), is mba preferred over ms cs? I don’t want to do a part time mba since the quality is worse than full time. Confused as to whether to do online MS vs full/part time mba. If it’s MBA, I have to do it at a Canadian school because of PR requirements. Interested to hear thoughts on it. YOE: 2.5 TC: 160k cad
MBAs aren't for "senior" positions, they are for strategic positions. EM is not a strategic position and an MBA won't help.
Thanks! Will a MS help?
I mean, it won't hurt. A lot depends on your undergrad degree quality and experience in terms of how much it can help.
Do none and grind LeetCode.
I mean this is a constant grind. My new year resolution is 1-2 qs a day and review on weekends. So far I’ve been consistent. I’m talking more long term
I'm waiting on a Canadian citizenship as well ; spend the time and energy on LeetCode and System Design, or actual programming langauge/development skills instead of doing an MS. I did an MS in Machine Learning from a top-5 Canadian Uni only because I was interested in it, but I'm not sure if it helps at all in the TC game tho. An MBA is extremely useless in the TC/corporate game in my opinion.
Did both. Not worth it. You can gain all those skills for free. You don't need a prestigious network if you can use social media well
