How good/bad is ~125k salary in Seattle?

How much do you think I can afford on rent?

Thanks!

You can afford to rent try to keep it at 25 percent of your gross monthly. Get roommates if you can to increase your savings rate.

Okay question, I thought when doing budgeting, we only need to consider salary, Isn’t it right?

You can live comfortably with that money. Probably you may not save much ( but you can save some $$)

    • It's perfectly fine for rent for a single person. Apartments for 1 bedrooms go for $1800-2300. You're living above your means if after rent and bills are paid you can't live on what's left comfortably.

I don't think question here is for a family or buying a property. $125k is good enough to pay rent of up to $2500 and still have at least $3500 to spend on other stuff

  • $125k in Seattle is pretty much the bare minimum to live comfortably. Bare minimum.

  • It’s absolutely fine, blind is completely out of touch with reality. Plenty of people live here on wayyy less than that. How much you can afford is more about personal priorities. Sit down and make a monthly/annual budget with savings goals, rent, food, bills, spending money, vacations, play with numbers a bit and see what works. If you’re already planning on saving stocks/bonus and that meets your savings targets then divide up your base salary however makes you happy. Some people don’t care about where they live and save money with roommates and a low spending percentage, others might really care where they live and pushing rent up to 33% of base salary might be ideal for their lifestyle.
