MSFT: End of employment vs Walkout day

May 27, 2021 39 Comments

Going from MS to FB, plan is to let manager know about it on next Friday, hence will be walked out the same day.
Wanted to know if end of employment date and walkout date are same?
Health insurance is tied to end of employment date, hence bit concerned about that as I have few appointments in coming weeks.

Next Friday will be June 4. You will already be into June so your health care should run through the month. Ask your FB recruiter when you are eligible for new health care to start. If there is a gap, then just elect COBRA from MS, keep current insurance until new plan kicks in. No break in coverage, keep your appointments.

You have something like 60 or 90 days to opt in to COBRA, so you can just wait until your new coverage kicks in, and if you run into a medical emergency before then, opt in at that time.

  • End date is whatever you or manager inform in exit form. Most people would give notice for 2 weeks, getting that as a vacation time.

    • Your notice date is the date for insurance. As others cited: unless you are in the middle of some medical procedure or will take long to start at FB, don't worry. You can use Cobra if an emergency comes up. Congrats and good luck!

    • If you get walked out, your insurance coverage will still continue until the date you gave as your last day.

usually health benefits run till end of month. 2nd, you can always buy cobra even though it may cost some, it's better than not having.

Interesting yank ritual. Down under we do walk abouts instead of walkouts.
