How much influence and power does a first time manager, L64 have on his team and decisions? Is he/she heavily coaches/guided/influenced but his boss in all decisions of running his team? Or annual comp distribution. Who works in which project under him etc? Edit : No, I am not trying to be a manager, nor am I one. Yes, power is the word I want here, because the person I am talking of, is taking this role because he wants power. And yes, those of you who asked about India mess, that manager is Indian, so I guess the comment about doing it for power is spot on, even though the reasons is wrong. So exactly how much power does he yield, that would translate to direct how much damage he can do to the team, given he is trying to yield this power for the wrong reasons This question is Microsoft specific at this time.
If you’re becoming a manager to have power, you are doing it wrong.
Edited the post for clarification
First line managers are highly disposable.
If your friend wants the position for power, then the first step would be to get better at hiding his intentions.
Not my friend. He is my boss. And I see him doing it wrong, and I am worried what his power hungriness will do to his team and me
We call it hunger. :) And generally it's best to quietly transfer out of this sort of team if possible. It's hard enough getting your job done. To have to constantly look over your shoulder? Ain't nobody got time for that.
Lvl 64 is solid middle management. At that level you will eat a lot of shit for the upper management.
They own your performance review and your rewards, yes they can damage you and they can pave the bad projects in your way. game on this is when you need to play the game with your skip, if you feel your skip doesn't care you need to change the team. It is not about Indian or American there are a**holes by genetic.
Spot on .. the way this mid management layer is designed , they will always be genetic a***oles. I don't know what they teach in MBA schools.
I thought about the skip, bit how do I get his/her feel without showing my hand. The meeting, if it goes wrong, would kinda set off a timer for my exit.
