Hey, I received an offer from Microsoft for Software Engineer role (L60) in Redmond, WA. I was wondering if I should negotiate. Do not have any competing offers. Offer Details - Base - 114k Sign on -20k Stock - 75k (over 4 years) Perf Bonus ~ 0-20% YoE - 1 year Current TC 115k
Microsoft give 150k stock to some new grads. Ask for more stock, maybe 125k?
University recruiting has a special budget. An l60 industry hire has no chance of getting that much stock. Just the way it works. If You have < 1yoe you can get a university offer and it's automatically more Stock.
75k is the standard stock for University hire too, unless you have competing offer. Been there, done that.
A friend of mine recently got an offer and the base was $120k before negotiation. So ask for more.
You should be able to get at least $120k base, maybe $125k. Stock and signing aren't bad for an l60 industry hire.
I know someone who got 120k stock and 40k signing as an L59
Thank you all for your suggestions, will try and negotiate. 😁

Worried that our top performer is an attrition risk. How do managers handle this?
Always negotiate. You don’t always need a competing offer. Negotiate stating why you feel your skills and value you bring to the table is justified for the extra amount you’re seeking for. Use data points available on the internet to quote.
Thank you so much. This is really helpful. I was scared that they might just revoke the offer if I negotiate. 🙈
They won’t. But they can scare the shit out of you by not getting back to you almost a day till the deadline. Stick to your guns.
