First time posting on Blind. I'm a college student and I've accepted a Microsoft internship offer for Summer 2020. Originally, I planned to do the internship, return to school for fall quarter (September to December 2020), and then graduate and return to MSFT if I get a return offer and want to accept it. Due to a change in my financial circumstances, I can only afford 2 more quarters at school instead of 3. That means I can't return back to school after my MSFT summer internship. I asked my recruiter if I can start full time immediately after my internship (assuming I get a return offer) and she said no. So now I'm a bit lost. To cope with my new circumstances, I have devised a new plan. But I'd like some advice on if it's a smart move or if I should consider something else. Current plan: - Jan to March: go back to school for winter quarter - April to June: do random internship instead of going to school for spring quarter (I already have a decent spring internship offer) - June to Aug: do MSFT internship - Sep to Dec: go back to school for fall quarter, do on-campus recruiting if no return offer/not satisfied with MSFT - Dec 2020: Graduate, start full-time work ^ that's my current plan to use up my last 2 quarters of scholarship from my school. Alternatively, I can go to school for 2 quarters (Jan to March, April to June), do MSFT internship, and then start full-time work at another company from Sep to Dec. And if I get a MSFT return offer and would like to take it, I can just quit my job in Dec. But it doesn't seem as good as my current plan, since I'd have to find a fulltime job, which is hard enough, and only work there for 3 months. My recruiter also told me I have to go back to school directly after my internship program to remain eligible for a return offer (maybe they will verify this via background check? or just an empty threat), so I'll probably play it safe and return to school. (P.S. I am a US Citizen, so no visa issues thankfully) TC 0, YOE 0 #internship #msft #returnoffer #planning #college #summer
Of course you can start immediately if you can pass the hiring bar and there's headcount available. The return offer process is a separate budget, but there's nothing requiring you to go through that process.
That's annoying, recruiter told me "if you want to start full-time immediately after the internship, then you should have applied for full-time and not the internship, and you would not be eligible to participate in the internship program." Are you saying that I should interview for full time SWE positions posted on the MSFT internal jobs website during my internship?
Your recruiter is wrong.
Take the internship and spend that same time after interviewing with better companies
